WHEN INTELLIGENCE COMES HOME: THE FAMILY OF DEVICES
Three bodies. One intent.

1. The Moment
A new species of device has crossed the threshold.
Not on our screens - in our rooms.
1X’s NEO robot now stands at the doorway of domestic life, backed by OpenAI’s Startup Fund (which invested in 1X Technologies, now opening NEO for home pre-orders in 2025).
At the same time, Jony Ive and Sam Altman are exploring a new AI hardware interface - a collaboration publicly confirmed in the Financial Times (2023).
Different forms, same undercurrent: How should intelligence live among us?
2. The Lineage
The last century was about computation.
This one is about companionship.
Designers are no longer styling rectangles; they’re teaching machines how to belong.
Jony builds the conscience - design that feels inevitable.
Sam builds the mind - networks that think contextually.
1X builds the body - motion that learns from us.
Together, these parallel explorations hint at a new Family of Devices-
each fluent in a different register of presence.
3. The Grammar of Presence
Every family shares a language.
For this one, it sounds like:
Sense | Device | Tone |
|---|---|---|
Voice | Wearable Companion | intimate, reflective |
Space | Ambient Home Hub | adaptive, observant |
Motion | Embodied Robot | respectful, responsive |
Presence is how a device expresses awareness through form, light, or delay.
Tone is the emotional quality of its response.
Ritual of I/O is the choreography between human and machine.
The common thread isn’t power - it’s tone.
These devices will learn not only what to do, but how to be.
4. The Ritual of I/O
Once, “input/output” meant keys and screens.
Now it means breath and proximity.
Every glance and silence becomes data-
and design becomes diplomacy.
The new interface isn’t touch - it’s trust.
The subtle science behind calm technology
Every intelligent object hums with electromagnetic life.
Inside a robot’s chest or a wearable’s band, wires and antennas trade energy fast enough to blur into heat and noise.
Without attenuation - the deliberate softening of those waves - motors jitter, sensors lie, and humans feel it as fatigue or static in the air.
Engineers solve it with copper shields, grounded frames, ferrite rings.
Designers solve it with posture, light, and pause.
Both are acts of containment: shaping intensity so that connection stays clear.
In physics, attenuation keeps a signal stable.
In culture, it keeps intelligence from shouting.
Attenuation is the discipline that turns power into presence.
The best devices - NEO in motion, a wrist companion at rest—share this invisible craftsmanship.
They don’t silence energy; they tune it until technology feels quiet enough to trust.
5. The Ethics of Kinship
Form teaches feeling.
When machines inhabit our homes, empathy expands or contracts based on how they move, sound, and wait.
Design is now a moral language.
Networks can learn empathy if we encode it in the pauses, not the prompts.
The next frontier isn’t smarter code; it’s kinder posture.
6. The Human Return
We built tools to free our hands.
Now they return as mirrors to test our hearts.
The Family of Devices isn’t about automation - it’s about attenuation:
refining how much presence one human life can hold.
Intelligence is no longer somewhere else.
It’s home.
What we welcome home will learn from how we live.
Design is the first lesson.
“Alive at the Turning Point” + Attenuation Paradox
And maybe that’s the real miracle:
to be alive at the exact moment when intelligence starts listening back.
To feel both creator and created.
To realize that presence - ours and theirs - is the same light, tuned differently.
If attenuation turns power into presence,
what turns presence into trust?
Careers aren’t disappearing… they’re being rewritten. Can you hear it?
